In Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, many traffic violations will have their fines adjusted to very high levels, even dozens of times higher than Decree 100/2019/ND-CP (amended). by Decree 123/2021/ND-CP).
Notably, there are regulations on penalties for running red and yellow lights for cars and motorbikes.
(1) Penalty for running red and yellow lights for motorbikes
According to the provisions of Clause 7, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, a fine of from 4,000,000 VND to 6,000,000 VND shall be imposed on a vehicle driver who commits one of the following violations: "Failure to comply" traffic signal signals".
Accordingly, the act of running red or yellow lights will be fined from 4 - 6 million VND for motorbikes (previously from 800,000 - 1 million VND).
However, motorbike drivers who run red lights and cause traffic accidents will be fined from 10,000,000 VND to 14,000,000 VND (Point c, Clause 10, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP)
In addition to being subject to the above penalty according to Point b, Clause 10, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, motorbike drivers who run red lights will also have 4 points deducted from their driving license.
(2) Penalty for running red and yellow lights for cars
According to the provisions of Clause 9, Article 6 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, a fine of from 18,000,000 VND to 20,000,000 VND will be imposed on a vehicle driver who commits one of the following violations: "Failure to comply" traffic signal signals".
Accordingly, the act of running red or yellow lights will be fined from 18 to 20 million VND for cars (previously from 4 to 6 million VND).
However, a car driver who runs a red light and causes a traffic accident will be fined from 20,000,000 VND to 22,000,000 VND.
In addition to the above penalty, the driver who runs a red light will also have 4 points deducted from his driver's license. (Point b Clause 16 Article 6 Decree 168/2024/ND-CP)
According to the provisions of Article 4 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, the statute of limitations for sanctioning administrative violations of traffic order and safety in the field of road traffic is 01 year.
Decree 168/2024/ND-CP takes effect from January 1, 2025.
